Drawing on faith: Stephen Procopio ’06 brings scripture to life

After graduating from Messiah with a degree in art, he launched a multifaceted career designing logos, painting signs, creating coffee shop posters and developing ads. But his true passion emerged as he began illustrating weekly sermon themes and visually interpreting scripture.

My hope is that the images resonate with the viewer enough that they want to reflect on the truths being portrayed—and return to the Bible,” said Procopio. “Much of my work is clearly rooted in scripture, and I intentionally strive to create compelling imagery that draws people in.

His artwork has been featured in churches and galleries across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. It has also appeared in prominent Christian publications, including Christianity Today and Lifeway Publishing. “I’m grateful for every chance I get to draw something meaningful—work that honors God and encourages others,” he said.

A lifelong music lover, Procopio worked in record stores during high school and dreamed of creating album artwork. That dream became reality when he was commissioned by artists like Caroline Cobb and Lovedrug to design album covers and promotional materials.

One of Procopio’s most unique experiences came when he was invited to illustrate an on-location book for the acclaimed TV series The Chosen.

Drawing on set is wild—in the best way. There’s such energy and immediacy. You’re constantly thinking on your feet, composing in real-time,” he said. “It was a deeply collaborative process. With people watching as I worked, it felt like we were all participating in capturing something sacred.

As a partner with Fish Coin Press, Procopio continues to take on illustration projects that challenge him both creatively and spiritually. “The work pushes me to grow in my faith and deepens my understanding of scripture in meaningful ways.”

Recognizing that many Reformed churches struggle to incorporate visual art into worship, Procopio created a fully illustrated version of the Gospel of John. His goal: to make theological concepts more accessible by visually accompanying the biblical narrative. “I wanted to help people see what was happening in the text—to invite them into the story through art.”

In addition to his professional work, Procopio shares his passion through teaching roles at Messiah University and The Art League in Alexandria, Virginia. “There’s nothing more rewarding than watching students catch the spark—then take it in their own direction.”

Whether illustrating a children’s devotional, creating a sticker for a youth group, or designing a

detailed book cover, Procopio sees his work as an offering.

Each piece is an opportunity to help others grow in their faith and understanding of the world God has made. It’s a gift to do this work.

Looking ahead, he hopes to illustrate children’s books and create his own graphic novel—projects that will continue his mission of telling meaningful stories through art.
