Secondary and K-12 Teacher Certification
![]() Messiah College offers the following secondary (grades 7–12) and K–12 teacher certification programs: Secondary (7–12) Programs: Biology Chemistry Social Studies English Mathematics K–12 Programs: Art English as a Second Language (must be combined with certification in another area) Environment Education (must be combined with biology certification) Family and Consumer Sciences French German Health and Physical Education Music Spanish Special Education (must be combined with Elementary Education) If you are interested in pursuing teacher certification in a secondary (grades 7–12) or K–12 area, you will major in the content area (e.g., mathematics, biology, English, Spanish, music) that you intend to teach. The courses that you take in your major are taught by expert faculty from the academic department that sponsors your major. In addition, you will learn about educational theory and instructional practices from Department of Education faculty who have extensive knowledge of teaching and learning processes. We believe that teachers are problem-solving professionals. So your certification program will develop your abilities to think, solve problems, and make decisions in critical areas such as instructional planning, instructional delivery, assessment, and classroom management.
