On Thursday, March 2, Pulitzer-Prize winning author Anne Applebaum came to Messiah College to present a lecture entitled "The Gulag: What We Know Now and Why It Matters." Applebaum is a columnist and member of the editorial board of the Washington Post. Her book Gulag: A History (Doubleday, 2003) won the 2004 Pulitzer-Prize for non-fiction.
Before a packed crowd in Alexander Auditoriam, Applebaum traced the history and motives of the former Soviet Union in establishing the Gulag, its notorious system of labor camps for political prisoners. A reception and book signing will follow the lecture.
The event was hosted by the Messiah College History Department and sponsored by the Friends of Murray Library, the Gender Studies Project, the Honors Program, the Provost's Office, the Sider Institute, the College Republications, and the International Justice Mission.
