Suicide ranks among the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s top 10 causes of death for elementary school-aged children and teenagers. The sudden loss of a peer is an emotionally and cognitively traumatic occurrence that often leads to instances of disenfranchised grief. This interactive course explores recent advancements in biopsychosocial and spiritual strategies for supporting bereaved children and teens in growing through grief following peer suicide. In applying the strategies to practice, the course includes a small group role-play of a practitioner engaging with a child/adolescent exploring religious/spiritual questions in connection with peer suicide.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the biopsychosocial and spiritual manifestations of grief among children/ adolescents bereaved by peer suicide.

2. Examine best practice strategies for supporting children/adolescents bereaved by peer suicide.

3. Compose a role-play integrating the strategies and religion/spirituality exploration in supporting a child/adolescent bereaved by peer suicide.

Instructional Methods:

Instructional methods will include large/small group discussion, polling, self-reflection, reflective dialogue, and role-play. Attendees will receive a training guide at the start of the course.

Relevance to Social Work Profession:
