Consisting of 10 pieces, the unique-to-the-region collection of original picture book art will be expanded continually with new acquisitions. In addition to promoting an appreciation for the visual arts, the collection is designed to encourage visual and verbal literacy. The illustrations represent a wide variety of media, styles, and subjects which have been created by both emerging and established illustrators. All of the illustrators featured have received honors for their work; several are Caldecott medalists. The estimated value of the current collection is approximately $30,000.

The Ruth E. Engle Memorial Collection of Children’s Book Illustration reflects significant aspects of Engle’s multifaceted life, honoring her abiding love for children, for books and for libraries. Both a charter member and board member of Friends of Murray Library, Engle contributed vision and vitality to the organization from its founding in 1993. Engle also served as a charter and board member of Friends of Murray Library. Some of Engle’s other achievements included teaching, developing the educational program for inpatient adolescents at Hershey Medical Center’s Psychiatric Unit, serving on the boards of the Elizabethtown Children and Youth Services and Lancaster’s Beth Shalom Home for teenage single mothers, and earning a graduate degree in clinical psychology at the age of 50.

The collection was dedicated on Wednesday, April 21, and will be viewable during normal library hours. The library is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to midnight, Friday 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, and Sunday between 2 p.m. and midnight. For more information contact Cherie Fieser at (717) 691-6006, extension 7181.
