Messiah
College Cultural Series
announces 20042005 season lineup,
adds fifth performance
|
GRANTHAM, Pa. (July 22, 2004) Messiah College announces its 20042005
season lineup for the Messiah College Cultural Seriesan annual public
concert/performance series sponsored by Messiah College. Traditionally
a four-part series, the Messiah College Cultural Series has added a fifth
performance this season to expand the mix of cultural artists.
| The Biava Quartet

| Recipient of the 2003 Naumburg
Chamber Music Award, the Biava Quartet is named for conductor and
mentor Maestro Luis Biava of the Philadelphia Orchestra. This award-winning
string quartet has made concert appearances in Bermuda and South Korea
in addition to performing at the Library of Congress in Washington,
D.C. and Alice Tully Hall in New York City. Biava most recently received
the top prize at The London International Competition for chamber
music. |

The quartet has been together since 1998 and the four members of the group
are currently at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. The first
violinist, Austin Hartman, is a native of central Pennsylvania.

| Roscoe Lee Browne and Anthony
Zerbe perform selections from more than 22 poets, including William
Butler Yeats, Dylan Thomas and E.E. Cummings, during this performance
of poetry, drama and comedy. The New York Times describe Browne and
Zerbe as a two-part harmony as their show sings. |

Browne, an Emmy and Village Voice OBIE Award winner, has narrated two Oscar-nominated
films (Babe and The Ra Expeditions) and has played
the title character in The Liberation of Lord Byron Jones. He
has also worked extensively in television, with guest appearances on ER,
Law and Order, New York Undercover, and seaQuest,
among others.
Zerbe, also an Emmy Award winner (as Lt. Trench in Harry-O),
appeared in both sequels to The Matrix as well as in Cool
Hand Luke, License to Kill, Star Trek IX: Insurrection
and True Crime. He has also guest-starred in an array of television
productions, including Gunsmoke, Bonanza and Frasier.

| April Verch, a native of Ottawa
Valley, Canada, combines fiddling, step dancing and vocals in her
repertoire. A three-time Canadian fiddling champion, Verch features
both traditional and contemporary pieces from all parts of the world
as well as her own compositions. EnRoute magazine describes Verchs
performances as the hottest old time music of the year. |

Verch graduated from Berklee College of
Music in Boston and is now an instructor. The most recent of Verch's
five studio albums, From Where I Stand, was released in
2003 and features Verchs debut as a vocalist.
Verchs Nov. 5 performance will be held at Messiah College in
Hostetter Chapel and all seating will be general admission. |

The Aspen Ensemble is the first group from the Aspen Music Festival
in Colorado to bear its name. Aspen consists of Rita Sloan, piano;
Nadine Asin, flute; David Perry, violin; Victoria Chiang, viola; and
Michael Mermagen, cello. The group began touring nationally together
in 2001.
Each of the members has garnered honors in numerous music societies
and orchestras around the world, from Tokyo to Baltimore. The groups
mixture of sound and use of trio, quartet and quintet arrangements
has been described as liquid virtuosity and fearless
bravura by The New York Times and The Chicago Tribune. |

Messiah Colleges own Tim Warfield headlines
this group which has been together since the early 1990s. Warfield
is joined by Cyrus Chestnut, piano; Nicholas Payton, trumpet; Vicente
Archer, bass; Clarence Penn, drums; and Stefon Harris, vibraphone.
Warfield, hailed by New York Times critics as possibly the
most powerful tenor saxophonist of his generation, can be
heard on Grammy-nominated CDs The Grand Unification Theory
(Stefon Harris) and Sonic Trance (Nicholas Payton).

Warfield began playing saxophone at age nine, and has
since won awards at many national and international music festivals.
He has also made numerous television appearances, including the Today
Show, the 1998 Trumpet Awards, and Bill Cosbys You
Bet Your Life. Warfields latest recording, 1998s
Gentle Warrior, made the top 10 New York Times critics
poll.
Warfield is Messiah Colleges first-ever Artist-in-Residence
in Jazz Studies. |

Cultural Series
All Messiah College Cultural Series performances begin at 8 p.m. in Miller
Auditorium, located in Messiah Colleges Climenhaga Fine Arts Center
on the college's Grantham campus, unless otherwise noted. Season subscriptions
for all five Cultural Series events are available for $85. Tickets for
