Messiah College to host 15th annual Building Strong Families conference

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Sept. 28, 2005) — The Department of Human Development and Family Science at Messiah College and the Mid-Atlantic Council on Family Relations will sponsor the 15th annual Building Strong Families conference. With the theme “Families in Transition,” the conference will be held on Oct. 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Boyer Hall, located on the college’s Grantham campus. The conference is open to the public. On-site registration is $55. For more information, visit www.messiah.edu/departments/family/resources/BSF2005/ or call (717) 766-2511, extension 7050.

The conference begins at 8:30 a.m. with registration and a continental breakfast, followed by a greeting and introduction. At 9:15 a.m., Penn State University researcher Mark Greenberg will give the conference’s keynote address on “Promoting Social and Emotional Development: Building Resilience for Transitions in Childhood.” Multiple workshops and sessions will be held throughout the day on various issues including, “Family Dynamics,” “Why Would a Father Desert His Children?,” “Poverty Looks Like Me,” “The Impact of Immigration on Individuals and Families Across the Life Course,” and “Mom and Dad Can’t Live Alone…What Can I Do?” Professors from Messiah College, Shippensburg University, Liberty University, University of Delaware and Penn State University will present their ideas during the multiple sessions offered. The conference will end at 4 p.m.

Greenberg, the director of The Prevention Research Center for the Promotion of Human Development at Penn State University, focuses his research on four areas: the effectiveness of school-based curricula to improve the social, emotional and cognitive competence of elementary-aged children; the Fast Track Prevention Program designed to prevent violence and delinquency in adolescents; understanding factors that place children at risk for aggression and other conduct problems; and understanding factors that influence the sustainability of community-based prevention.
