Academic English Support helps students develop the reading, writing, listening, speaking, and communication skills they need to succeed in university courses.
Whether English is your first language or you speak another language at home, support is available to help you strengthen the academic skills you need to succeed.
How Can We Help?
If you're having difficulty with your coursework and aren't sure what kind of support you need, start with the Academic Success Center.
You can stop by the Academic Success Center in Murray Library, Suite 115, or complete the Academic English Support Form. We'll talk with you about your experience and help determine what support may be appropriate.
In some cases, students may be asked to complete an English language assessment, such as the TOEFL, to help us better understand their academic English skills and determine appropriate support. This information is used to guide support and does not affect your grades or academic standing.
Academic English Support May Include
- Language Immersion – Students with significant academic English needs may be recommended for an English immersion program before continuing with coursework.
- Academic English Course – Students may enroll in a first-semester Academic English course focused on reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
- Academic Coaching – Individual support with academic skills, strategies, organization, and navigating university coursework.
- Academic English Coaching – Individual support with the academic language skills needed for reading, writing, speaking, listening, and communicating in university courses.
- Temporary Academic Supports – Temporary accommodations, such as extended testing time, may be provided when a demonstrated need affects a student's ability to demonstrate what they know.
Depending on your needs, the Academic Success Center may also connect you with other campus resources, such as the Writing Center, tutoring, or the Office of Academic Accessibility.
