Men's Volleyball, Graduate Assistant

Position Summary:  Assists the head coach in operating the intercollegiate men’s volleyball program that pursue our complementary goals in Messiah University athletics of striving for athletic excellence and developing Christian character.  This is a two year, 20 hours/week commitment from approximately August 1st –May 21st each of the two years.  Graduate Assistants are compensated equivalent to current tuition, receive a 10% tuition discount and are eligible for reduced on- campus apartment housing (when available) and a discounted employee meal plan, as coordinated through the graduate program. 

Education Required:  Bachelor's degree required; current enrollment in one of the degrees within the graduate program in Higher Education Leadership at Messiah University. 

Experience Required:  Previous participation in volleyball as an athlete and/or coach. 

Skills, Characteristics Required for Position:

  • Men’s volleyball experience;
  • Desire to learn and assist in administration of NCAA Division III intercollegiate program, including roster compliance, travel logistics, budget allocation, inventory, meet entry/administration, strength training, and recruitment; shadow head coach and event assistant coaches;
  • Possess and grow strong organizational skills, including: time management, prioritize multiple responsibilities, flexible, problem solve, resourceful, and possibly supervise a workstudy student;
  • Possess and grow good judgment, the ability to work independently with tasks being completed accurately and promptly, and the ability to take ownership of special projects as gifted and interested, i.e. spiritual development, spring break trip, etc.;
  • Possess a working knowledge of Microsoft office suite and Google suites;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; possess good listening, judgement, and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to be a team player within the coaching staff, athletics department personnel, work study students, athletes, and Messiah University community;
  • Ability and interest to establish appropriate and effective mentoring relationships with student-athletes; be encouraging, empathetic, supportive, a good listener,
  • Interest to assist in preparing, implementing, and evaluating athlete training, and to help coach, teach, and train student-athletes in skills and strategies in order to help athletes maximize their potential, under direct supervision of the head coach;
  • Desire to embrace and enhance existing programs and systems, and offer/initiate new ideas; take initiative;
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality;
  • Christian faith commitment is required. 

Special Working Conditions:  Required to work weekends and evenings as needed. 

 

Primary Duties

1.

Assist in coordinating general administrative duties: including roster compliance, travel logistics, procurement and inventory of equipment and apparel, budget allocation, meet entry and home meet administration, find and share answers to questions, and follow administrative procedures and university policies.

2.

Communicate with the coaching staff, athletic trainers, sports information/compliance directors, facility assignors, and department administrators (procurement, admissions, athletics) as needed.

3.

Assist in the planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluation of prospective student athlete recruitment and campus visits.

4.

Maintain consistent, prompt, and reliable attendance.
