Human Research Subjects Protection Training
Human Research Subjects Protection Training
All researchers conducting human-subjects research at Messiah University are required to document completion of Human Subjects Protection Training every five years. The Messiah IRB will accept training certificates from CITI or PHRP, both of which require a fee. Alternatively, researchers may complete the OHRP Human Research Protection Foundational Training offered for free online by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS). This training ensures a basic understanding of the ethical principles, federal regulations, and responsibilities related to human research protections.
How to Access the Free Lessons and Quizzes
If using the free online training, you are required to complete the following five online lessons:
Lesson 1 – When HHS Regulations Apply
Lesson 2 – What is Human Subjects Research
Lesson 3 – What are IRBs
Lesson 4 – IRB Review of Research
Lesson 5 – Participant Centered Informed Consent
-
Click on each Lesson Title to begin. The training is self-paced, and no login is required. Each lesson includes a short quiz at the end.
-
You will receive a separate certificate of completion after passing each of the five quizzes.
-
After submitting each quiz, you will be prompted to download or email the certificate.
-
- Be sure to save all five certificates (PDF or image format). You may print them or store them electronically. At the end of each lesson, click on the "Take the Quiz" button.
- Once all five lessons are complete, create a single .pdf file that includes all five certificates and upload that file to the PI documentation section of your Axiom account. Each researcher (including students) must upload their own documentation to their own Axiom account.
- Training certificates are valid for five years.
