Student Coordinator Positions
Students from across an array of disciplines find they can contribute to campus sustainability. You can join this team to make a difference on and off campus. Positions are available each semester to help coordinate one of our focus areas; Energy, Engagement, Waste, Biodiversity, or Food. Founded in 2007, the garden in the center of campus is a visible center piece of sustainability on campus. Each week between March and November there multiple volunteer hours where community members can help weed, plant, and tend, the Grantham Community Garden. Volunteer hours are posted on the events page, and can be found on social media or on the Office front door. We also welcome students looking for a 1 or 2 credit internship who wish to learn more about gardening, chickens, bees, or farm markets. No experience necessary!
Trees are vital to our ecology, our economy, and our health so planting one (or many) is a rewarding experience for everyone involved! Each year Messiah partners to plant trees on or off campus to support and restore the Chesapeake watershed. Between 2019 and 2021 Messiah is working with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay to plant more than 600 trees and native meadows on over 7 acres of campus providing habitat and water filtration, preventing soil erosion, and protecting the economic and ecological resource of our natural waterways. Request a free compost bucket for your apartment, office, or dorm room. Composting is a great way to reduce food waste and build soil. Once requested, buckets can be picked up at the Office of Sustainability during posted office hours.
How do you stack up to your friends?
The Sustainable Living Survey is a fun, reflective, and educational way to learn more about sustainable living at Messiah. Take the survey, learn about sustainable practices, and challenge yourself and your friends to live a little more environmentally and socially conscious lives. Once taken, the survey will automatically generate your response and you will receive a certificate in campus mail.
Spoke N True bike club is a unique opportunity to learn how to service your own bike, help work on other's bikes, and maintain the fleet of Messiah Bike-share bikes.
