Study Mathematics at a Christian University
Our Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree program in mathematics provides a broad-based program with a liberal arts emphasis. This ensures that you’ll have not only the required analytical and technical skills to become a successful mathematician, but you’ll also be a great communicator with a solid writing and interdisciplinary foundation.
Messiah University’s B.A. in mathematics, with an option for a secondary teaching certification or a statistics minor, is unique among Christian universities of comparable size.
As a mathematics major or minor at Messiah University, you'll be able to:
- Take statistics courses taught by a Ph.D.-trained statistician, an uncommon opportunity as at other schools, math or physics teachers often pick up teaching statistics courses.
- Present your work professionally at our annual Spring Symposium on campus, or regionally and/or nationally at professional meetings attended by students and faculty.
- Learn from faculty who have research interests in areas such as nonparametric statistics, regression analysis, differential geometry and combinatorics.
- Pursue a minor in statistics or double major in a variety of fields that interest you.
- Receive a complimentary student journal membership to the Mathematical Association of America and the American Statistical Association.
- Work alongside other students in projects related to communications technology, assistance for disabled persons, sustainable energy, transportation technologies and water resources.
- Serve as a tutor or teaching assistant.
- Join the Math Problem-Solving Club and build mathematical models to develop problem-solving skills.
As a graduate of the mathematics program, students are equipped to secure positions such as:
- Mathematician
- Actuary
- Researcher
- Teacher
- International school teacher
- Graduate student in mathematics, statistics or education
- Positions in government and business

Why study mathematics?
Mathematics majors learn to appreciate the logical beauty of mathematical thought and how to use it to solve many kinds of problems. After you take the foundational courses taught by accomplished faculty, you choose from theoretical and applied mathematics courses as you pursue career objectives.
By going beyond the realm of facts and numbers, you’ll develop the skills sought in almost every sector of the job market including engineering, science, telecommunications, computer services and software, aerospace, automotive, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, government and more.
Teaching certification
If teaching interests you, you can apply to Messiah’s teacher education program in addition to your mathematics degree. You’ll take required mathematics courses and also take a sequence of education courses that prepare you to take the state-required exam to become a certified secondary (grades 7-12) mathematics teacher in public or private schools. Students who choose the teaching certification program have an extremely high pass rate on required Praxis examinations for certification and regularly receive commendations for their high performance on the Praxis II Mathematics Content exam. Qualified mathematics teachers are in demand, and graduates seeking teaching positions have had a 100 percent job placement record in the last decade.

Messiah's unique approach to hands-on learning
Learning in the classroom is important but actually applying that knowledge in a hands-on way can make all the difference. At Messiah University, the Experiential Learning Initiative (ELI) allows Messiah to take this hands-on learning to a new level by giving students the opportunity to apply what they have learned to various real world contexts--such as an internship/practica, service learning, off-campus program, holding a student leadership position, or participating in undergraduate research.
