Kathy Hettinga, mfa

The courses I teach involve exploring the computer as a tool to create both graphic design and art. I see my role as a delicate balancing act between embracing technology and critically examining its role. For several years I have been seeking to create visible bridges/venues that utilize the new technologies in forms that can speak to contemporary people, yet are composed of the rich content of the historic Church. I found such a vehicle, while a Research Fellow at Yale. The work, "Grave Images," documents the historic faith images found in the desert southwest and transforms these into new forms - artist's books and computer prints. The first volume, Lambs of the San Luis Valley, has been acquired by several collections of artist's books, including Yale University and the New York Public Library, and was included in an invitational book arts show at the Corcoran Museum of Art, Washington, D.C. My work has been shown in numerous national exhibitions and international sites in Poland, Italy and England.
