Chapel policies
Please find below the general policies students should adhere to for Messiah University's Chapel services.
A little consideration, a little thought for others, makes all the difference. ~ Winnie the Pooh
Any student who fails to attain his/her chapel requirement in a given semester will be placed on chapel probation. Students on chapel probation will be fined $15 for each chapel under the requirement. For example, a student who attends 10 of the required 14 chapels in a given semester will be fined $60 directly to their student account. Fines can be paid at Falcon Exchange. While chapel fee funds do not factor into the operational budget, they do support general student benevolence needs, student scholarships toward conference participation, and special student programming, as determined on a case-by-case basis.
Applicable college personnel will be notified each semester of all students on chapel probation. Since student leaders are expected to be exemplary in all areas, an active chapel probation status may negatively impact one's eligibility for service in a student leadership position. For details, please refer to the Student Handbook or speak with your advisor/coach.
Students involved in deception of any of the chapel policies (such as scanning a QR code for a friend, submitting fraudulent petition requests, etc.) will incur the maximum probation fine of $210 ($15 x 14 chapel requirements). Students will also be required to meet with one of the Campus Ministries pastors and will be placed on chapel probation for the following semester.
Appeals regarding a student's chapel probation status should be submitted in writing to the Campus Ministries office within 10 business days of the Chapel Probation notification email. Decisions of Campus Ministries may be appealed to the Dean of Students.
Full-time residential students are expected to attend 14 chapel opportunities each semester (7 for full-time commuters). Services and gatherings will be offered in various venues on most Tuesday mornings, Tuesday evenings, and Thursday mornings. We recommend attending regularly from the start of the semester to avoid panic at the end of the term.
Students may request a semester-long chapel reduction or exemption for the following reasons only:
- The student is engaged in a semester-long, credit-bearing internship, clinical or student teaching experience that conflicts with chapel attendance.
- The student is employed off-campus for 25 hours or more per week.
- The student has parenting obligations for their own children that prohibit chapel attendance.
- The student is ill or absent from the university for two (2) consecutive weeks or more (exemption request must be accompanied with an excuse from doctor or Engle Center).
Requests for reduction or exemption must be completed within four (4) weeks of the start of each semester. Chapel attendance petition forms are located in Self-Service Banner under the Student tab.
Exemption is automatically granted to part-time students or full-time students who are studying off-campus for the semester.
Due to the abundance of chapel opportunities each semester, no chapel exemption is available for missing a particular chapel opportunity (such as illness, work, fatigue, doctor appointment).
New to attending chapel? All you need is your cell phone! No waiting for your attendance to register in the system. Instant access to your records puts you in the driver's seat as you track your required chapels. The attendance set-up involves two SIMPLE steps:
- Step 1: Download the iAttended app from this QR code. When prompted to verify, you must use your Messiah email. We recommend using the Microsoft option to do so. After you install the app and log in, click the "Enter Code" button at the bottom of the screen and enter GW8G to load and subscribe to our upcoming chapels.
- Step 2: Go to chapel with your smartphone and at the end, Campus Ministries staff will display a QR code on the overhead screens. Just open your phone camera, scan the code, and watch your attendance credit register. If your battery dies, you forget your phone altogether, or you're just having difficulty with the scan, stop by one of the card reader attendants stationed at the main exits. They will have an iPad wth the QR code and/or can assist you to ensure you receive credit.
No smartphone? No problem - just email us at campusministries@messiah.edu at the start of the semester and we'll help you get credit.
REMEMBER: All full-time students have a chapel requirement - 14 credits for residential students and 7 for commuters.
