23rd Annual Dinner and Public Program
The Friends of Murray Library annual dinner and public program was held on Wednesday, November 5 in Hostetter Chapel. The evening included dinner served by Two Bridges Catering and a public program featuring Gregg Behr, an educational champion who hails from Pittsburgh, PA, where he was inspired by the life of Mr. Rogers. Gregg spoke on the foundational qualities that foster lifelong learning and being kind neighbors and encouraged us to incorporate these into our own neighborhoods, creating warm spaces for learning and exploration.
Friends also presented Dr. E. Morris Sider with an honorary lifetime membership for his many years of supporting Friends and Murray Library. In addition to recognizing Dr. Sider, our library student research grant awardee, Olivia Reardon, presented her research on The Great Books and Me: Ethical Formation in the Classroom.
We're grateful to everyone involved in making the dinner a meaningful event!
Harrisburg Libraries - An Exclusive Day in the State Capital
On June 18, Friends enjoyed a day trip to Harrisburg, visiting the PA Archives, McCormick Riverfront Library, State Library, and Midtown Scholar. Thirty folks attended, receiving behind-the-scenes tours at the various sites.
The day began at the PA Archives, the home of more than 250 documents including William Penn's 1681 charter to found the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Archivists shared details about the new building, which opened in December 2023, as well as provided Friends with the opportunity to see historical records and preservation methods.
Friends enjoyed lunch in the T. Morris Chester Community Room at the McCormick Riverfront Library. Afterwards, Ryan McCrory, Executive Director of the Dauphin County Library System, gave a tour of the library, which included the main library area, children's section, and administrative offices.
Friends received tours of the rare books collection, STEM lab, and main reading room at the State Library. Staff described many resources and Friends enjoyed taking photos of the beautiful mahogany woodwork and ceiling art.
The last stop of the day was at Midtown Scholar. Friends browsed the bookstore, bought a treasure or two, and enjoyed a drink from the cafe.
Many thanks to everyone who participated! It was a great day!
