Why is CACREP accreditation important?

Messiah College’s M.A. in counseling offers one of the best indicators of a quality counseling program — CACREP accreditation. CACREP, which stands for Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, evaluates educational program content to ensure that it meets or exceeds standards set by the counseling profession.

The benefit to the student, in addition to identifying high-quality graduate programs, is the outcome. “Students will leave the program well prepared to enter the world of professional counseling,” says John Addleman, director of the graduate program in counseling at Messiah College.

This preparation includes licensing. “State licensing boards tend to trust programs that are CACREP accredited,” explains Addleman. “This typically means that the process for students to get licensed after completing the program is a simpler and more streamlined process.”

What’s more, according to CACREP, graduates of accredited counseling programs perform better on the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE).
