Biology Major
BiologyThe biology major at Messiah College provides you with a strong foundation in biological sciences, including a broad background in zoology and botany with supporting courses in chemistry and mathematics. You'll find a wealth of laboratory courses to give you hands-on experience, and the Oakes Museum along with Messiah's scenic campus provide further "laboratories" for biological studies. In addition, your B.S. degree in biology will prepare you well for further studies and specialization in graduate school. Teacher's Certification in Biology (7-12) If teaching interests you, Messiah's Teacher Education program provides you with excellent preparation for earning Pennsylvania Teacher Certification (grades 7—12) to teach biology in public or private schools. In addition to a strong foundation in your major, you'll take the education methods courses to give you the skills and techniques to be an effective teacher. Messiah College also offers Pennsylvania State certification in environmental education (grades K—12). Environmental education certification is designed to accompany biology secondary education certification (grades 7—12). Thus, students graduate with the ability to teach in the public and private secondary schools while implementing environmental programs on a wider level. Future Our biology major prepares you well for a career in a variety of biology-related fields. Many biology majors choose to pursue graduate studies in biology, microbiology, nutrition, biotechnology, medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, medical technology, or physical therapy.
