Yvonne Martin MBA: Marketing 334 Frey Hall X2610 Ymartin@messiah.edu Personal Homepage Professor Yvonne Martin was born and raised in Pennsylvania. She doesn't remember ever being very far from business since her mother was an entrepreneur--the owner and head designer of a florist shop. At that time, some people didn't think this occupation was particularly fitting for a pastor's wife but ironically they loved the bouquets of flowers that accompanied the pastor's visit. Her undergraduate studies began while working full-time to pay the bills while her husband was in college. She took advantage of the opportunity employees of Penn State had to take courses and that was the beginning of an academic career. She and her husband, Ken, took turns working and studying to complete their degrees. Professor Martin's undergraduate degree is from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and her M.B.A. degree is from Penn State (University Park location). She moved to the Harrisburg, PA area and began teaching at Messiah College in January 1981. She teaches primarily in the area of statistics and marketing. In addition to her work in the classroom, she edits the departmental newsletter, Beyond the Bottom Line; and serves on the Academic Council. Believing firmly in fair trade, she chairs the Ten Thousand Villages U.S./International Board of Directors. Professor Martin loves to remind students that one person can make a difference in making the world a better place to live. Ten Thousand Villages grew out of one woman's compassion for developing-world artisans. Today this is a $23 million plus operation (in retail sales dollars). In addition, she serves on the Board of Directors for MEDA (Mennonite Economic Development Associates) whose dual thrust is to encourage a Christian witness in business and to operate business-oriented programs of assistance to the poor. Professor Martin and her family are active members of the Grantham Brethren in Christ Church and associate members of the University Mennonite Church in State College. She has four children and two "perfect" grandsons. |
