Human Resource Management Major![]() As a human resource major, you will learn how to help organizations utilize their human resources to create competitive advantages while addressing the concerns of employees, their families, and other stakeholders. You will develop skills in recruitment, selection, training, and compensation--all vital tools in an increasingly dynamic marketplace. Opportunities Messiah College is home to a student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management, a national professional organization. As a member of this group, you will hear guest speakers, tour local firms, get to know fellow HR students, and network with HR professionals. International Experience Messiah College participates in an ongoing exchange program with human resource majors at a small Christian liberal arts college in the Netherlands. In alternating years, a group of Messiah students travels to the Netherlands during the January Term to visit commerce and cultural sights, participate in academic activities with Dutch students, and live with Dutch hosts. In other years, Dutch students visit Messiah College. Practical Experience Like many business students, you may opt to participate in internships which turn work experiences into learning opportunities and make connections between classroom theory and the "real world." In the past, human resource majors have participated in internships at most major firms in the area, including Hersheypark, Merck-Medco, American Heart Association, and the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry. Some internships may also offer a special opportunity for service to the community. Often, internships lead directly to full-time career opportunities. Our Faculty The Department of Management and Business has thirteen full-time faculty members. Two also serve in other College roles — Messiah College legal counsel and women's basketball coach. All of our faculty, including several adjunct professors, are highly qualified and have a breadth of expertise in their fields. Our faculty members will stay in touch with you even if you opt to study abroad or at our Philadelphia Campus. They'll extend an open-door policy to invite you into their homes for opportunities to mingle with other management and business students and professors on a regular basis. They believe strongly that college is an important time for developing long-lasting relationships. The primary human resource professor's experience includes performance appraisal, organizational development, and strategic planning consulting for educational, health-care, and insurance organizations. Her research specialties are group decision making, selection, and work values, and she has published articles in Human Resources Management Review, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, Employee Responsibilities and Rights Journal, and Group Dynamics. She has also published a study guide to accompany a major Principles of Management textbook.
