Job Title : Teen Group Leader/Administrative Assistant
Employer : Center for Champions
Position Description : I do basic work like creating flyers, keeping up on office communication, working on newsletters and mailings, and working with grants as well. I also plan lessons for the adult school program. During the after-school program I work with students ages 12 to 16 leading Bible studies and life skills lessons, providing homeowrk help/tutoring, and supervising field trips. I act as a mentor to about 12 girls, buliding relationships with them and spending time with them in small groups outside of the Center as well.
Salary Range : My position is paid hourly, and most of the salaries for staff come out to roughly $20,000.
Previously Held Positions : I was an intern at a similar after-school program during college, but this is my first job out of school.
Courses Found Most Helpful : Strategies, Dynamics, Parenting, and Child and Adolescent Development.
How the HDFS Program Has Helped Prepare Him for Work :
My Strategies project helped me learn about facilitating a group and creating curriculum, and my particular project was very appropriate for the age group I am now working with. I am also planning to implement my Strategies project at my workplace for the teen girls, which I am looking forward to.
Center for Champions is also very family-oriented and focuses not just on the children who come to the program, but also to the parents and families of those children. I am able to put much of what I have learned in classes to use in the way of family dynamics, parenting, and child and adolescent development, Many of my courses have proved to be very useful!
How Faith Interfaces with Work : My faith inspires me and motivates me to do my work, as it is very challenging, but I feel it is something I am called and even compelled to do. I believe that I am called as Jesus to these kids in their difficult situations. Also, since it is a christian program, I am blessed to be able to speak about my faith to my kids whenever I feel it is appropriate. We also pray as a staff sometimes even with the kids.
