Why Social Work at Messiah University?

Nationally Accredited

The Department is nationally accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and it meets or exceeds the standards established by the profession to educate social workers. Therefore, students furthering their education can earn an M.S.W. in just one year.

Faith Integration

The Social Work department is intentional about integrating faith and practice issues throughout the curriculum which allows students to explore how his/her spiritual beliefs shape helping and empowering others. 

 

 

Field Education

A curricular balance of classroom learning and practical experience builds student confidence in their abilities. Students who graduate with a B.S.W have interacted with a minimum of 3 social service agencies and have completed over 600 hours of community engagement.

 

Competency Based

Students develop competence in engaging, assessing, intervening, and evaluation individuals, families and communities in need. The Department stresses the importance of engaging diversity and in addressing the advancement of human rights and social and economic justice.

Community

 Within the major, students develop a closely-knit community through shared experiences and taking many of the same classes. Students can also get involved in groups like Messiah’s Social Work Club and Phi Alpha Honor Society.

 

Study Abroad

Studying abroad is highly encouraged in the major because it helps students develop cultural competence and an appreciation for diversity. Opportunities for social work practice abroad are available in Ecuador, Chicago, and Uganda. 

 

Service Learning

Through the Agape Center for Local and Global Engagement, student are connected with programs and agencies for students to complete their service-learning. Students can take advantage of one-time or ongoing volunteer opportunities, and service trips both nationally and internationally.

Advance Standing for Graduate School

After completing a B.S.W. at Messiah University, graduates can receive their master’s degree within a year. The advance standing program is only good for the first five years upon graduation.

Accomplished Faculty

Our faculty have many years of social work practice experience at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels to supplement their knowledge, skills, and teaching expertise. Our professors have completed numerous innovative research projects, publications, and reports.
