Messiah University is privileged to have faculty that not only are committed to education but also participate in Nationally Accredited Organizations.

Dr. Lane is an LCSW member of Mental Health Collaborative in affilation with Dr. Michele Bratina, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at West Chester University. She is also a member of the National Association of Criminal Justice and a contributing researcher with FEMA rural disaster relief and evacuation program.
Professor George is a Board Certified Diplomat in Clinical Social Work. She is a member of the Tri State Consortium of Field Directors and a member of the Advisory Committee for the Uganda Studies Program. She also serves on the Executive Board of the Board of Directors of the American Clinical Social Work Association (ACSWA).

Faculty Research

Messiah University Faculty has developed, implemented and completed numerous, innovative research projects, publications, and reports.

Professor George also presents nationally on a regular basis and has engaged in research in several different areas of study including the following: Math Anxiety, Collaborative Teaching, Spirituality and Pedagogy, Field Instruction and Supervision, and Clinical disorders and Social Work.

In 2014, Professor George engaged in research with four students on faith integration and ethical practice and presented their findings at the NACSW national conference and the NASW-PA annual conference.

Professor George also engaged in research regarding millennial students in social work education. Their findings were presented at the NASW-PA Conference in State College, Pennsylvania and at the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors National Conference in Dallas, Texas.

Dr. Lane has presented nationally and internationally on gerontological issues delving into issues surrounding the physical and mental health needs of older adults who are imprisoned in 4 central Pennsylvania prisons without the chance of parole (lifers).

Dr. Lane published an article on Aging in Place in Prison, based on conducted research in 2018. She is also a contributing member of PACRI Pennsylvania Center for Refugees & Immigrants.

Practice Experience

The current faculty at Messiah has many years of social work practice experience at the micro, mezzo and macro levels to supplement their knowledge, skills and teaching expertise.

Professor George has extensive clinical experience in working with individuals, couples and families. She specializes in the treatment of depression, anxiety, trauma and abuse, relationship issues, eating disorders, dual diagnosis and personality disorders.

Dr. Charlene Lane is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of clinical and administrative experiences. In addition to researching and administrative responsibilities with the aging population, Dr. Lane has published articles on issues surrounding aging in place as well as the experiences of older adults in prison. Dr. Lane has presented both nationally and internationally and has conducted research projects with colleagues from Criminal Justice and Education along the years.
