Diet for the Control of Vomiting and Diarrhea

Vomiting
During the first 12 hours after vomiting has begun, limit yourself to clear liquids in small amounts. Avoid dairy products, citrus juice and solid foods. Recommended liquids are:
  • Water
  • Sweet Fruit Juices (apple, peach, grape)
  • Bouillon Broth
  • Jell-O
  • Softened Popsicles
  • Carbonated Beverages (stirred, to remove bubbles)
  • During the next 12 hours, continue frequent small amounts of fluids listed above. Gradually add foods from the list below. Avoid dairy products (i.e. eggs, butter, cheese and milk, citrus fruits and juices).
  • Apple Sauce, peeled apples, pears, and bananas
  • Toast and Jelly (no butter)
  • Soup (not creamed)
  • Soda Crackers
  • Rice, boiled potato, plain spaghetti
  • Dry Sweetened Cereals
  • Pretzels
  • After 24 hours, begin to add foods from the following list:
  • Broiled Chicken (skin removed)
  • Lean Beef
  • Apples (peeled)
  • Cottage Cheese
  • Tapioca Pudding
  • Boiled, cooled non-fat milk
  • Gradually add more foods during the next two or three days. Do not rush back to a full, regular diet. If vomiting persists, call the Health Center

    Diarrhea
Eliminate all fruits, except apples and bananas, all fruit juices (apple juice is acceptable) and eggs. Include the liquids and solids listed in the first two groups above. Avoid aspirin products and coffee. As diarrhea begins to subside and stools begin to firm, begin to add foods from the last group listed above. Gradually return to a regular diet. If diarrhea persists or recurs, call the Health Center.
