Self Care Trichomonas Description Trichomonas, or Trich, is a type of parasitic organism that infects both male and female genital organs and can be transmitted through sexual contact. Symptoms Trichomonal infection in women may produce a greenish-yellow, foamy vaginal discharge which may have an unpleasant odor. Itching and inflammation of the vaginal area may be experienced. Diagnosis is confirmed by microscopic examination of vaginal discharge. Males with a trichomonal infection usually do not experience symptoms. However, males with female sexual partners who have been diagnosed with trichomonas should be evaluated for treatment. Treatment The effective drug for the treatment of Trichomonas for both men and women is Metronidazole. Even after symptoms subside, it is essential for the infected person to complete all medication. Male and female partners should be treated concurrently to avoid reinfection. Prevention Avoid sexual contact with anyone who has a sexually transmitted disease.
