8 helpful things you’ll want to bring to college

A feminine dorm shows a bed, desk, photos and tapestry on the wall with string lights.

You’ve purchased your textbooks, clothing and bed comforter, but what’s missing? With move-in just around the corner, we compiled a list of items that will make dorm life even better:

Bed risers

A plastic bed riser sits on the floor under the post of a metal bed.

Placing risers under the posts of your bed not only adds height, but provides you with more storage space underneath the bed. Plus, many contain outlets, giving you extra charging abilities!

Shower shoes

A pair of flip flops on a white background.

Let’s be real – since all the students in your hall are sharing a bathroom, shower shoes are a must. Flip-flops, crocs or any shoe made of rubber will do the trick, since they dry easily.

Noise-cancelling headphones

A pair of black headphones.

Studying with friends is a great way to verbally process subjects and quiz one another. But for those times when you need absolute silence to focus, noise-cancelling headphones will be your best friend.

Water-filtering pitcher

A water filtering pitcher sits on a counter in front of a bowl of lemons and limes.

If you’re looking to filter drinking water from water fountains or sinks even further, water-filtering pitchers can remove the taste and odor of chlorine, and can be easily kept in a dorm room.

Reusable water bottle

A clear water bottle sits on a wooden table.

Along the same lines, reusable water bottles like Hydroflasks and Nalgenes reduce plastic waste and help you stay hydrated on the go. You’ll notice that many water fountains around campus display the number of disposable bottle that particular fountain has saved.

Steamer/wrinkle spray

A Conair clothing steamer.

Using a steamer is a great replacement for bringing an iron and ironing board to college (Because everyone brings an ironing board to college, right?) Anti-wrinkle spray is another way to quickly reduce wrinkles in a hurry.

Command hooks and strips

A pack of Velcro command strips.

This is the perfect way to hang photos, frames and hooks without damaging the walls. Once you’re finished with one, simply remove it from the wall according to the instructions. These little guys, especially ones with Velcro, hold lots of weight as well.

Essential oil diffuser or wax-melter

An essential oil diffuser sits on a wooden table in front of a brick wall.

Instead of traditional candles, electric wax melters and essential oil diffusers are the perfect way to keep your room smelling fresh year-round!

We hope all of our students return to campus feeling rejuvenated and ready to dive back into their studies, extra-curricular activities and friendships. With these tips, you’ll be ready for on-campus living!
