"How to Transform Glittering Vices into Virtuous Gold" (Honors Program)

Dr. Rebecca Konyndyk DeYoung, Professor of Philosophy at Calvin University, will speak on how we can break free of vices and seek virtue.

Cultivating virtues is a noble moral goal, but is it possible? Most of us live most of our lives under the captivity of well-entrenched disordered desires. In this talk, Dr. DeYoung will uncover the common pattern behind all the vices and explain why we find them so enticing. That diagnosis, however, makes breaking free from them seem unlikely, even impossible. To solve this problem, she will argue that we need to move beyond Aristotle to Augustine, and beyond habituation to spiritual transformation, to cultivate Christlike virtues instead.
