Description:
Religion and spirituality can serve as a source of protection and/or risk agent for adults navigating the death of someone loved. Ethical and holistic social work practice entails cognizance of the role that religion/spiritual diversity hold in the biopsychosocial assessment/treatment of bereaved persons. Participants will engage with the profession’s Code of Ethics guidelines on ethical integration of religiosity/spirituality into practice and Forester-Miller and Davis’ seven-step model for ethical decision-making in this interactive case-based course. Emphasis will also include the connection between practitioner self-awareness and client/patient religiosity/spirituality exploration in practice.

Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the role of religion/spiritual diversity exploration in culturally competent practice.
2. Examine introspectively one’s source of professional motivation, moral identity, and
religious/spiritual awareness.
3. Apply the seven-step model for ethical decision-making and Code of Ethics guidelines on integrating religion/spiritually into treatment to a bereaved adult case study.

Instructional Methods:  Instructional methods will include large/small group discussion, polling, self-reflection, reflective dialogue, and case study. Attendees will receive a training guide at the start of the course.

Relevance to Social Work Profession:  Participants will advance their understanding of the role of religiosity/spirituality in bereavement practice, methods of integrating the profession’s ethical guidelines on religion/spiritual diversity, and religious/spiritual self-awareness.
