Description:

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention lists suicide as the 10th leading cause of death in the United States for adults. Rising violent death rates remain a public health concern and underpin the growing bereaved survivor family population. Drawing on the family resilience approach, this interactive course examines the latest research and best practices for integrating religiosity/spirituality exploration into biopsychosocial assessment/treatment. These practices form the basis of a small group case study of a family navigating religious/spiritual conflicts in connection with parental suicide.

Learning Objectives:

1. Discuss a family’s biopsychosocial and spiritual changes following suicide.

2. Analyze changes in family functioning and dynamics through a family resilience approach.

3. Construct a case study of an interaction with a family adjusting to parental suicide applying the approach and best practice strategies for integrating religion/spirituality exploration.

Instructional Methods:

Instructional methods will include large/small group discussion, polling, self-reflection, reflective dialogue, and case study. Attendees will receive a training guide at the start of the course.

Relevance to Social Work Profession:

Participants will gain competence in the multidimensional experience of family suicide, understanding of the latest research, and best practice methods of integrating religion/spirituality into the biopsychosocial assessment/treatment process.

Teacher Commissioning Service (Dept. of Ed.)

  • Date: May 9th, 2024
  • Location: Parmer Hall, The Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts
  • Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm
  • Cost: FREE

Every spring the Department of Education and the Teacher Education Program co-sponsor a Farewell and Commissioning Service for their graduating seniors. Come for an inspiring evening as we celebrate God’s goodness and challenge this year’s Department of Education and TEP graduates to lead lives of purpose as they depart Messiah.

All Education and TEP alumni, students, their friends and families and cooperating teachers are invited to attend. The service includes scripture reading, prayer, a brief meditation usually given by a department graduate, musical performances by local school groups, a commissioning litany, and the presentation of lapel pins to the graduates. The lapel pin challenges and reminds graduates to continue to learn, serve, and care through their work as teachers. A reception and time of fellowship follows the service.
