Academic coaching is a popular student success program at Messiah University. While offering accountability and encouragement, a trained coach works collaboratively with the student on:
The student and the coach work as a team to identify areas where the student is struggling and to develop strategies to succeed. It is a very student-driven process. The student's needs should direct the discussion and the strategies that will be implemented for improved performance. The student's motivation to succeed is essential to the process.
The coach can act as a "sounding board" to focus the student's thoughts to work towards solutions that will help the student overcome obstacles. The coach provides the necessary structure, accountability, and support that can help the student with ADHD succeed. The coach typically meets with the student on a weekly basis for 20-30 minutes to talk through the past week and the week(s) ahead.
