Dr. David Blight, who was awarded the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in History for his book "Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom," will deliver a lecture entitled, "'My Voice, My Pen, My Vote:' Frederick Douglass and the American Democracy."

Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David Blight is the Sterling Professor of History and Director of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale University. He is the author or editor of a dozen books and is a multi-award-winning writer.

The Center for Public Humanities Annual American Democracy Lecture, hosted in conjunction with the Department of History, Politics, and International Relations. Featured lecturer is best-selling author and journalist Michael Dobbs.

Michael Dobbs was a long-time reporter for The Washington Post, covering the collapse of Communism as a foreign correspondent. He has taught at leading American universities, including Princeton, the University of Michigan, and Georgetown. His previous books include the best-selling One Minute to Midnight on the Cuban missile crisis, which was part of an acclaimed Cold War trilogy. He lives outside Washington, D.C.

2023 American Democracy Lecture Keisha Blain: "Black Women & the Struggle for Human Rights in U.S. History Keisha Blain, Ph.D., is professor of Africana studies and history at Brown University. She is a nationally respected scholar, historian and human rights advocate. A regular columnist for MSNBC, she has written for the public on education, housing discrimination, Juneteenth and the importance of recent movies, “Till” and “The Woman King.” Blain is the author of several books including, “Set the World on Fire: Black Nationalist Women and the Global Struggle for Freedom” and “Until I am Free: Fannie Lou Hamer’s Enduring Message to America.” She served as president of the African American Intellectual History Society from 2017 to 2021 and has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including being a Guggenheim Fellow (2022) and a Carnegie Fellow (2022). https://www.messiah.edu/homepage/2805/2016_american_democracy_lecture
