Honors Program FAQs

No, the Honors Program curricular requirements are intentionally imbedded within the college'€™s general education curriculum.  Please see our Program Requirements page for more information about the MUHP requirements.

Yes, our participants represent each of the four schools, and can come from any major.   For example, many students in majors such as education, nursing, and engineering have successfully completed the Program. 

Yes!  Our participants are involved in all aspects of campus life including intercollegiate and intramural sports, officers in student government, radio DJs, theater productions, service groups, campus newspaper, residence life staff, musical groups -- the possibilities are endless!

Absolutely!  We encourage our students to take advantage of the many study abroad opportunities Messiah University offers.  Many, if not most, of our MUHP participants spend at least one semester studying off campus.

With the exception of specially offered May term or J-term Honors trips (to Peru & Bolivia, Malaysia & Borneo, or New Zealand), only Honors classes taken at the Grantham campus can meet your Honors ID requirement.

Yes.  With careful planning, and depending on your major'€™s requirements, it is possible to graduate one or even two semesters early.

Applying to the Honors Program

There is no separate application for the Honors Program.   Candidates for the Program are selected from the pool of Freshman applicants who have been accepted for admission by January 15.   To be initially considered for membership into the Honors Program, students must fall in the following range:

Timeline:

  • Students in their senior year of high school who would like to be considered for the Honors Program must complete the Messiah University application process by January 15th.
  • Selected students who have met the initial qualifications described above are invited to interview for entrance during the November, January and February Scholarship Days.

Please note: Not all initially qualified students will receive an invitation to interview.

  • At the conclusion of this interview process, students will be notified of the results and will find out if they have been accepted into the MUHP in early March.

How many students are admitted into the Honors Program?

Each year, approximately 100 students are admitted in the program and of those 100 students, seven are awarded Trustees' Scholarship and approximately 70 are awarded our President's Scholarship.  The remaining students are awarded the Faculty Scholarship

Honors Program scholarships

The Trustees' Scholarship is valued at the full cost of the first-year's tuition.  This amount is awarded for four years, provided students maintain a 3.3 GPA at the end of the first year, and a 3.6 GPA each following academic year.

The President's Scholarship is a combination of the Provost's Scholarship awarded in the first year, plus $5,000.  This amount is awarded for four years, provided students maintain a 3.2 GPA at the end of the first year, and a 3.4 GPA each following academic year.

The Faculty Scholarship is a combination of the Provost's Scholarship awarded in the first year, plus $1,000.  This amount is awarded for four years, provided students maintain a 3.2 GPA at the end of the first year, and a 3.4 GPA each following academic year.
