 Position Summary:

The Area Coordinator (AC) is a Graduate Assistant.  The AC position is a 10 month, live-in staff member in the Office of Housing & Residence Life.  The AC provides leadership and support to Resident Assistants (RAs) and the Director of Housing & Residence Life to build positive, stable communities that foster opportunities for student growth, group interaction and self-responsibility. The AC assists with departmental planning efforts and operational tasks as assigned.  This position is 25 hours per week and renewable for up to two years. The yearly contract will run from Aug 1 until May 31.

Education Required: 

Bachelor’s Degree required, current enrollment in Graduate Program in Higher Education at Messiah University.

Experience Required: 

1 year of undergraduate Residence Life experience

Special Working Conditions: 

Live-in position; 25 hours a week, with some hours during nights and weekends.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervision & Training
    • Supervise 10-15 RAS including bi-weekly one-on-one meetings, monthly staff meetings, evaluations, and overall supervision of staff.
    • Participate in the recruitment, selection, training and evaluation of RAs.
    • Contribute and develop positive working relationships between and among staff.
  • On Call & Crisis Management
    • Serve as an on-call person for residential student emergencies.
    • Provide emergency response and crisis management as needed on campus.
    • Partner with Public Safety to create and maintain a safe and secure community
  • Housing Assignments & Residence Life Mediation
    • Assist in the opening and closing of residence halls for fall and spring semester
    • Mediate roommate conflicts as needed. 
    • Update resident’s housing assignments as needed.

       

  • Programming
    • Lead the RA programming model.
    • Assist with programming ideas, allocating funds, and ensuring implementation.
    • Work with Head RAs to track all programming efforts in the residence halls.
    • Serve as a primary contact for campus wide educational and social programming.

       

  • Administration
    • Work collaboratively with Facilities and Housekeeping staff on matters relating to residence hall maintenance. 
    • Partner with other Student Affairs Offices including Counseling Services, Student Activities, Health Center and the Dean of Students to support the student body.
    • Assist in leading staff wide community service initiatives
    • Implement a recruitment program to recruit new students to the RA team each year. 

       

  • Other duties as assigned.
